SKG★ to ★★★: which security lock do you need?
The stars on a lock are not just a marketing badge — they represent an independently tested level of burglary resistance. Here's what they mean and which rating suits your situation.
What the stars mean
SKG-IKOB is an independent Dutch institute that tests locks for burglary resistance. The number of stars indicates how long a cylinder withstands an attack using common burglary tools:
- SKG★ (1 star) — Basic security. Offers limited resistance and is no longer considered sufficient for entrance doors in most situations.
- SKG★★ (2 stars) — The most common standard in the Netherlands. Offers good protection and is recognised by most insurers. Suitable for apartments and doors that are less directly accessible.
- SKG★★★ (3 stars) — The highest level of protection. Includes core-pull protection and offers the most resistance to break-in techniques. Recommended for ground-floor front doors and easily accessible entrances.
In addition to the cylinder, the quality of the strike plate, hinges and door frame also play a major role. Security is only as strong as its weakest link.
Which rating suits your situation?
- Ground-floor front door, directly accessible from outside: SKG★★★ is strongly recommended. These doors are the most attractive targets for burglars.
- Apartment front door on an upper floor: SKG★★ is often sufficient, provided the building entrance is also properly secured.
- Outbuildings, garage or shed: At least SKG★★★, since these are often less visible and therefore a greater risk.
- Internal doors: SKG★ or ★★ may suffice, depending on what you want to secure.
Remember: security is a chain. An SKG★★★ cylinder in a weak door frame offers far less protection than you might expect. A good locksmith looks at the whole picture.
Frequently asked questions — SKG locks
What does the SKG certificate mean?
SKG-IKOB is an independent Dutch certification institute that tests locks and security hardware for burglary resistance. The more stars, the longer a cylinder withstands a burglary attempt using common tools. SKG certification is recognised by insurers and is part of the Politiekeurmerk Veilig Wonen (Safe Home quality mark) requirements.
Do I absolutely need SKG★★★?
Not always. SKG★★★ is the safest option and is recommended for easily accessible front doors — especially on the ground floor or directly accessible from outside. For apartment front doors on upper floors, SKG★★ is often sufficient. Discuss your specific situation with a locksmith for tailored advice.
Does SKG count for my contents insurance?
Many insurers require certified security hardware as a condition for full coverage. Some policies specify a minimum of SKG★★ or SKG★★★ on entrance doors. Always check your policy conditions — and ask your insurer if you are unsure.
