Locked out? Here's what to do — and what to avoid
Stay calm. In most cases a slammed door can be opened without any damage. The right steps make all the difference — and so does knowing what not to do.
What exactly happened?
There are two common scenarios when you find yourself locked out, and the solution differs for each:
Door slammed shut — the door fell closed on its own (nightlatch or spring lock). Your keys are inside. In most cases the door can be opened without damage using a special tool. This is the most common situation and usually the simplest to resolve.
Door locked with a key from outside — you forgot your key or it was lost. The cylinder needs to be turned back. If you have a second key available, try that first. If not, a locksmith can help — sometimes the cylinder needs to be replaced.
Not sure which situation applies to you? Send a photo of your lock via WhatsApp. I can often tell straight away what the best approach is.
What NOT to do — and what TO do
What NOT to do
- Do not try to force the door open. Kicking or pushing against it causes expensive frame damage and usually does not work.
- Do not try to pick the lock yourself with a hairpin or similar. With modern security cylinders this does not work, and you risk damaging the lock.
- Do not call a random locksmith from an online ad without checking rates first. Rogue locksmiths often quote a low call-out fee but multiply it tenfold once on site.
- Do not call the fire brigade for a lockout. They will refer you to a locksmith — you lose time and cause unnecessary disruption.
What TO do
- Check whether another entrance is open — a back door, window you can reach, or a neighbour with a spare key.
- Contact a reliable locksmith and ask for the rate upfront. A trustworthy locksmith will give you the price before setting off.
- Have your ID ready. A good locksmith always checks that you are entitled to access the home.
- Send a photo of your lock via WhatsApp if possible. That way I can assess the situation in advance and come prepared.
Frequently asked questions — locked out
What does opening a slammed door cost?
From €89 during the day, €119 in the evening and €149 at night. The rate that applies to your situation is always confirmed before I set off. If I am unable to open the door, you pay nothing — no call-out charge and no labour costs.
Will my door be damaged?
In most cases, no. For a door that has slammed shut, damage-free opening is the standard approach. If the lock is seized or damaged and drilling is the only option, I will always discuss this with you first and explain what it costs. In that case a new cylinder is needed, which is included in the price we agree together.
Should I call the police if I'm locked out?
No. The police do not open doors for people who are locked out — that is not their role. Only call 112 in the event of an acute emergency (fire, medical emergency). For a lockout, call a locksmith.
